Personnel of the 18 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Litani Barracks in Bida have carried out a sanitation exercise around the Bida main market, Bida Local Government Area of Niger.

Brig. -Gen. Taye Ahmed, Commander of the brigade inaugurated the sanitation exercise in Bida on Thursday.

He said that the sanitation exercise was part of the week-long Nigerian Army 161st anniversary celebration.

Ahmed said no society would be healthy without a clean environment, adding that sanitation was to keep the environment clean especially as the country was facing an outbreak of cholera.

He said, “Health is wealth, we started the celebration with Jumaat prayers on June 28 and a Church service on June 30, alongside other activities such as medical outreach,” he said.

Ahmed said the brigade was partnering with environmental agencies in Bida to clear drainages to prevent blockages and outbreak of diseases.

He added that the sanitation would spur the people to keep their environment clean as a way of contributing their quota to the society.

The commander disclosed that they would also visit some schools to talk to the young people about patriotism and the need to take their civil duties with all importance.

One of the residents, Ndagi Mohammed, thanked the army for conducting the exercise, adding that the gesture would contribute to a healthy environment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the army was supported by the Police, Civil Defense, NDLEA, FRSC, and the Niger Environmental Protection Agency. (NAN)
