In a startling development earlier on Monday, an explosion has jolted residents of the Ikeja Cantonment and the surrounding environs.
The Nigerian Army said the explosion occurred in farmland within the premises of its Cantonment in Ikeja, Lagos.
A statement by the force’s spokesman, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said: “The incident, which occurred near the Mammy Market, has sparked concerns among residents, given the historical backdrop of explosions within the Cantonment.
“According to preliminary reports, the explosion is believed to have been triggered by the burning of refuse and other flammable debris by a farmer tending to the land. Despite the intensity of the blast, no casualties have been reported, alleviating immediate fears of injuries or fatalities.
“Nevertheless, the proximity of the explosion to civilian areas has raised understandable apprehensions among the public. In response, the NA has swiftly mobilized its Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to the scene. The area has been cordoned off as investigators work diligently to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion.
“We understand the concerns of the public, given the history of incidents within the Cantonment. However, I want to assure everyone that the situation is under control,” stated Colonel Ahmed Usman, spokesperson for the NA. “Our priority right now is to ensure the safety of all residents in the vicinity and to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.”
The statement said the timely response from the force has been met with cautious optimism from residents, who have been reassured of their safety.
As investigations continue, the NA has urged residents in the general area to remain calm and cooperative. “We appeal to the public to refrain from spreading rumors or engaging in panic-induced activities,” Colonel Usman emphasized. “We are committed to providing updates as soon as new information becomes available.”
In the meantime, security measures have been heightened within the Ikeja Cantonment, with patrols intensified to maintain order and vigilance. The NA remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, both within the Cantonment and its surrounding environs.
As the investigation progresses, the Nigerian Army remains vigilant, working tirelessly to uncover the circumstances surrounding today’s explosion and to prevent any similar incidents in the future.
