Nigerian Navy Chief of Operations dies in Egypt

The Nigerian Navy is mourning the loss of its Chief of Operations at Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Musa Katagum, who died in Egypt during a medical follow-up trip.

Military sources disclosed that the senior naval officer passed away at a hospital where he had gone for further evaluation after undergoing surgery in September last year. His death has sent shockwaves through the Armed Forces and the maritime security community.

Rear Admiral Katagum was recently appointed Chief of Operations by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass. As Operations Chief, he was responsible for coordinating naval deployments and overseeing strategies aimed at curbing piracy, crude oil theft and other maritime threats within Nigeria’s territorial waters.

Before assuming the role, he served at the Defence Headquarters and earlier distinguished himself as Chief of Naval Intelligence. In that capacity, he was instrumental in deepening intelligence-led operations and strengthening collaboration with other security agencies.

Colleagues describe him as a disciplined and strategic-minded officer whose contributions significantly enhanced the Navy’s operational efficiency. Under his watch in various appointments, the service recorded notable improvements in maritime domain awareness and the protection of critical national assets.

Senior officers have expressed profound sorrow over his passing, noting that his professionalism, mentorship and commitment to duty left a lasting impact on the Navy.

Rear Admiral Katagum’s death represents a major loss at a time when sustained maritime security efforts remain vital to Nigeria’s economic stability and national security. He is survived by his family and a host of colleagues who continue to honour his legacy of courage and service.
