How joint military operation got Oyo schoolchildren from Ansaru terrorists grip

Nigerian security agencies have successfully rescued schoolchildren and their teachers abducted by Ansaru terrorists in Oyo State following a weeks-long intelligence-led joint military operation that combined ground offensives, aerial surveillance, and coordinated intelligence gathering.

The rescue operation, concluded at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, marked the end of a painstaking mission launched after the victims were kidnapped during an attack on their school on May 15, 2026.

The operation was carried out by a Joint Inter-Agency Task Force established on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The task force comprised personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and other security agencies.

Rather than launching a direct assault that could have endangered the lives of the hostages, security commanders adopted an intelligence-driven strategy that relied on surveillance, precision operations, and sustained military pressure to weaken the terrorists while ensuring the safety of the captives.

Military sources disclosed that troops advanced into the Oyo National Forest from multiple fronts, effectively cutting off the terrorists’ escape routes and restricting their movement. The ground offensive was supported by real-time Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, while the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Force provided aerial surveillance and air cover throughout the operation.

The coordinated assault enabled security forces to destroy key terrorist infrastructure, including communication hubs and logistics dumps used by the insurgents, without causing harm to the abducted children and their teachers.

At the same time, parallel security operations were launched against Ansaru’s support network in several states. The operations led to the arrest of suspected informants and logistics suppliers believed to have aided the terrorist group. Security sources also disclosed that the sustained pressure triggered defections within the terrorist organisation, further weakening its operational capability.

According to defence officials, the combined military and intelligence operations gradually isolated the terrorists, disrupted their supply chains, and dismantled sections of their command structure, making it increasingly difficult for them to continue holding the victims.

Faced with mounting pressure from advancing troops and the collapse of key elements of their operational network, the terrorists eventually released the schoolchildren and their teachers unconditionally.

The rescued victims were immediately evacuated to a secure location, where they are receiving medical attention, psychological counselling, and other psychosocial support before being formally handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunification with their families.

A senior defence official described the rescue as one of the most successful hostage recovery missions in recent years, noting that the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led joint military operations.

“The operation required patience, precision, and seamless collaboration among all participating agencies. Every tactical decision was guided by the overriding objective of ensuring the safe return of the children and their teachers while dismantling the terrorists’ operational capability,” the official said.

Defence sources hailed the mission as a textbook example of modern joint operations in which intelligence, special forces, air power, and inter-agency coordination were effectively integrated to achieve strategic objectives without endangering innocent lives.

The successful rescue has been welcomed by parents, community leaders, education stakeholders, and civil society organisations, many of whom had endured nearly two months of uncertainty over the fate of the victims.

Security analysts said the operation reflects growing synergy among Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies and highlights the increasing emphasis on intelligence-driven counter-terrorism operations.

They noted that beyond securing the release of the hostages, the operation dealt a significant blow to Ansaru by degrading its logistics network, disrupting its communication infrastructure, and weakening its command structure.

The rescue comes amid intensified military offensives against terrorist and criminal groups across different parts of the country, with the Armed Forces reaffirming their commitment to dismantling violent extremist organisations and restoring peace to affected communities.

Authorities have assured Nigerians that operations will continue to track down the remaining members of the terrorist group and all those who supported the abduction, stressing that those responsible will be brought to justice.
