Army Chief hails military for quelling insurrection in Benin Republic

  •  Lauds Security Efforts in Lagos and Ogun

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu has praised officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their rapid deployment that contributed to the restoration of democracy in the Republic of Benin, describing their response as a hallmark of professional soldiering.

He also commended troops operating in Lagos and Ogun States for sustaining security and enabling economic activities to thrive.

The Army Chief, who addressed officers and men during an operational visit on Tuesday, said he was on ground to personally appreciate their steadfast commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the two states.

He noted that the General Officer Commanding had briefed him on the improved security landscape, high discipline levels and enhanced operational readiness across all units within the division’s area of responsibility.

“You have done well,” he told the troops. “I want you to maintain that trajectory, and I also want to assure you that your welfare is our priority.”

He stressed that matters relating to accommodation, allowances, healthcare and the education of soldiers’ children would continue to receive top-level attention. He encouraged personnel to channel concerns through their commanders, assuring that issues would be promptly addressed.

The COAS also welcomed what he described as a significant reduction in illegal duties, urging troops to remain disciplined, uphold military values and avoid conduct capable of tarnishing the Army’s image.

“Do your best to stay out of trouble,” he said. “Maintain the soldier core values and that will keep you on the right path.”

Highlighting their recent deployment to Benin, the Army Chief commended the troops for responding swiftly and effectively to directives aimed at restoring democratic order in the neighbouring country.

“That is the hallmark of soldiering,” he said. “Immediately the instruction was given, officers mobilised and ensured the task was carried out effectively. Congratulations to all of you — that is the spirit.”

He further urged officers and soldiers to remain focused, listen to their superiors and uphold the Nigerian Army creed, noting that adherence to its core values would guide them in their duties.

The Army Chief concluded by reaffirming the leadership’s commitment to the welfare of troops, adding that senior officers present were available to take questions on welfare and operational matters.
