The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has called for a collaborative and multi-dimensional approach to addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
He made this call during the graduation ceremony of Junior Course 98 at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) in Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna, on Friday.
Speaking at the event, Gen. Musa emphasized the significance of the college’s role in preparing officers to meet modern security demands.
“The College has, over the years, remained committed to providing world-class training for tactical and operational level officers,” Musa stated. “It strives to refine officers’ intuition and sharpen their creative capabilities to respond adequately to complex security threats in a collaborative environment.”
He highlighted that this drive aligns with his leadership vision of building a people-centric Armed Forces capable of meeting constitutional responsibilities in a joint environment.
Musa congratulated the graduating officers, who he described as professionally qualified Grade 3 Staff Officers from the Nigerian Armed Forces, other defense-related agencies, and friendly nations like Cameroon, Gambia, and Ghana. He urged them to meet the high expectations placed on them as they transition to active service roles.
“The country is currently faced with various complex security challenges,” the CDS noted. “These threats call for a collaborative and multi-dimensional approach to securing our collective future.”
Focus on Leadership, Teamwork, and Integrity
Gen. Musa reminded the officers that leadership is defined by character, uprightness, and the ability to inspire others. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and maintaining the highest level of integrity.
“You must stay agile, innovate, evolve, and uphold discipline in your service to the country,” he said. “Respect for the rule of law and human rights is crucial. Citizens and your respective countries will expect greater professionalism from you in the conduct of your duties.”
He also charged the officers to let the Armed Forces Act, Standing Operating Procedures, and Rules of Engagement guide their activities, particularly in internal security and counter-terrorism operations.
“You must embody the values of courage, discipline, and excellence in protecting your nation and its people,” Musa added.
International Collaboration
The CDS acknowledged the presence of international students, congratulating them for successfully completing the course. He encouraged them to maintain the relationships built during the program, as they are vital for fostering future strategic partnerships and military collaboration.
“To our colleagues from other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, though our environments might seem different, our aim remains the same,” he said, reiterating the importance of synergy in achieving national goals.
Appreciation and College Achievements
Gen. Musa expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support for the Armed Forces and the AFCSC. He also commended the families of the graduating officers for their sacrifices during the course.
Earlier, the Commandant of the AFCSC, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Alhaji, lauded the CDS for his mentorship and support. He detailed the college’s ongoing efforts to expand its curriculum to address emerging security threats and commended the students for their dedication and resilience.
“The course brought together officers from the Armed Forces of Nigeria, friendly nations, and other government agencies, equipping them with the skills needed to operate effectively in various operations,” AVM Alhaji said.
The event marked another milestone for the AFCSC, reaffirming its commitment to excellence in training officers for Nigeria and its allies.
