The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has launched an investigation into the reported deaths of two leaders from the Okuama community, James Oghoroko and Dennis Okugbaye, who allegedly died in military custody.

Oghoroko, the president-general of Okuama, and Okugbaye, the community’s 81-year-old treasurer, were said to have passed away six days apart after their detention by the military. The two were reportedly arrested alongside four others—Arthur Ekpekpo, Belvis Adogbo, Anthony Ahwemuria, and Rita Akata—between August 18 and 20, 2024.

Their arrest followed the killing of 17 soldiers on March 14, 2024, during a peace mission aimed at resolving a land dispute between Okuama and the neighboring Okoloba community.

Addressing journalists on Monday, Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, confirmed that General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“Over the weekend, headlines emerged alleging that individuals detained in connection with the Okuama incident had died in custody,” Gusau said. “The CDS has directed the 6 Division to conduct an investigation, and we expect findings on the matter shortly. For now, these remain allegations, and we are committed to uncovering the truth. By tomorrow, we will provide more details.”

The DHQ’s assurance comes amid growing concerns from the Okuama community and rights groups demanding accountability for the whereabouts and welfare of the detained individuals.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
