Media Vital to Military Operations, – NNS Beecroft Commander

The media plays a crucial role in military operations by shaping public perception and countering misinformation, the new Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft, Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel has said.
Speaking at a Meet and Greet event with Defence Correspondents at the weekend in Lagos Commodore Nimmyel emphasized the strategic importance of the media in military engagements. He commended journalists for their commitment to accurate reporting and their consistent engagement with the Nigerian Navy.
In his remarks, Commodore Nimmyel highlighted the media’s dual potential, stating that it can be used positively or negatively in shaping narratives. He noted that the Navy considers media engagement an essential part of its operational strategy, describing it as a “media line of operations.”
“I have been in the North East for the past two and a half years and have seen firsthand what insurgents do with their media platforms,” Nimmyel said. “When such messages reach communities that are not well informed, or that lack access to alternative narratives, the effects can be enormous and damaging.”
The Commander stressed that the timely dissemination of information is critical in military operations. He warned that if the Navy does not proactively tell its own story, others will shape the narrative in ways that may not reflect the reality on the ground.
“If you hesitate to tell your own side of the story, the press will tell it for you,” he stated, assuring journalists that under his leadership, NNS Beecroft would prioritize transparency and provide prompt updates on naval activities.
Commodore Nimmyel expressed gratitude to the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, for entrusting him with the leadership of NNS Beecroft, the Navy’s premier command. He pledged to uphold the values of professionalism, discipline, and effective communication during his tenure.
Addressing potential misunderstandings between military personnel and civilians, the Commander assured that the Navy remains committed to protecting citizens, not intimidating them.
“As human beings, misunderstandings can arise in the line of duty,” he acknowledged. “However, we will continue to remind our personnel that our duty is to defend the people, not to brutalize them. As a law-abiding force, we are here to protect you.”
The well-attended gathering featured principal officers of the command and provided an opportunity for the new Commander to interact with members of the press.
The Meet and Greet engagement reinforced the Navy’s commitment to fostering a strong working relationship with the media. Defence Correspondents present at the event commended the Commander’s approach to openness and pledged to continue their role in promoting accurate and responsible reporting on military operations.
With Commodore Nimmyel at the helm, NNS Beecroft looks set to deepen its engagement with the press while ensuring that the Navy’s operations and contributions to national security are accurately communicated to the public.
