Navy, Cross River Government Reaffirm Partnership on Maritime Security

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Chidozie Donald Okehie, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to sustaining maritime security and socio-economic development in Cross River State.

Rear Admiral Okehie gave the assurance on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, during a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, at the Governor’s Office in Calabar.

He was accompanied by senior naval officers, including the Command Operations Officer, Commodore C. E. Oji; the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory, Commodore A. Oride; and other principal staff officers of the Command.

The FOC commended Governor Otu for his continuous support to the Navy, particularly towards the operations of NNS Victory and the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. He pledged that under his leadership, the Navy would remain vigilant in securing the state’s waterways, enhancing maritime safety, and strengthening civil-military relations in line with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

Rear Admiral Okehie also assured that the Command remains resolute in combating maritime crimes, including smuggling, oil theft, and piracy, while promoting peace and stability in the state’s coastal areas.

In his remarks, Governor Otu praised the Nigerian Navy for its vital role in safeguarding Cross River’s maritime environment, describing the service as a key partner in the state’s security architecture.

He noted that peace and stability were essential for economic development and called for sustained collaboration between the Navy and the state government to tackle emerging security challenges, particularly youth unemployment and the activities of non-state actors.

Governor Otu further pledged the state government’s continued support for naval operations and initiatives aimed at promoting maritime security and economic prosperity in the region.
