The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced the successful elimination of top bandit commanders in a series of airstrikes conducted in Zamfara State as part of Operation Fansan Yamma.
In a statement on Sunday, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, confirmed the precision airstrikes, carried out in collaboration with ground troops, inflicted heavy casualties on bandits loyal to notorious leader Kachallah Bello Turji.
Heavy Casualties and Uncertainty Over Turji’s Whereabouts
While the exact number of casualties remains undisclosed, Akinboyewa noted that “scores of bandits were neutralized” and several top commanders sustained injuries. However, the whereabouts of Kachallah Turji, one of the most wanted bandit leaders in the region, remain unknown.
“Sequel to the fierce engagement, Kachallah Turji’s whereabouts remain unknown, adding further pressure on his crumbling network,” Akinboyewa said.
Precision and Coordination in Operation Fansan Yamma
The operation was executed with real-time coordination supported by an Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, ensuring precise targeting. According to Akinboyewa, bandits attempting to flee eastward of the hill were engaged in multiple strikes, resulting in additional neutralizations.
“The identified targets were swiftly engaged using rockets and cannons in multiple passes, delivering devastating blows to the enemy. The aircrew maintained visual and radio contact with the ground troops,” he explained.
Impact and Community Relief
The operation has been met with relief and celebrations from local communities in Zamfara State. Several kidnapped victims were also freed during the offensive, offering renewed hope to families affected by banditry.
In his statement, Akinboyewa emphasized the military’s commitment to restoring peace and security in Nigeria:
“The Nigerian Air Force reiterates its unwavering commitment to coordinating with ground forces to eradicate all forms of criminality in the country. Together, we will defeat all enemies militating against the security of our territories and the well-being of our people.”
The recent strikes are part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to dismantle criminal networks and bring lasting peace to Zamfara and other affected regions in the country.
