ONSA Hosts Second UK-Nigeria Security Defence Partnership Dialogue

In a bid to confront Nigeria’s security challenges head-on and bolster regional and international security efforts, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has convened the second UK-Nigeria Security Defence Partnership Dialogue in Abuja.

Opening the dialogue, National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu emphasized the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, rooted in shared values and a commitment to global security, stability, and peace. Ribadu stressed the importance of robust multilateral cooperation and information sharing in addressing emerging threats.

The dialogue, building upon the success of the inaugural event held in London, aimed to assess and implement commitments made during the previous dialogue. Ribadu outlined Nigeria’s efforts in fulfilling its commitments, including the establishment of the Anti-Kidnapping Fusion Centre and measures to uphold Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.

Ribadu called for a comprehensive approach to tackling contemporary security threats, emphasizing the need for regional stability, countering violent extremism, and promoting sustainable peace and prosperity. He urged deeper bilateral cooperation across various security domains, including defense capacity building, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and maritime security.

The dialogue also highlighted the importance of nurturing the next generation of security and defense leaders through enhanced collaboration in education, training, and professional development initiatives.

Representing the UK National Security Adviser, Tim Barrow, Dame Sarah Macintosh reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting allies in upholding regional and international peace. She expressed appreciation to the Government of Nigeria for its partnership and emphasized the UK’s dedication to deepening cooperation across the Security and Defence Partnership.
