Navy fires Commanding Officer over “loss of confidence”

The United States Navy has dismissed the commanding officer of the destroyer USS Mason, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership.

In a statement released Friday, Rear Adm. Alexis Walker, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, relieved Capt. Chavius Lewis of his duties. The Navy said the action was taken due to a “loss in confidence in Lewis’ ability to command.”

The brief statement did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the decision. The Navy typically uses “loss of confidence” as a standard explanation when removing senior officers from command positions.

“The Navy maintains the highest standards for leaders and holds them accountable when those standards are not met,” the statement said.

Lewis, who took command of the Mason on Nov. 14, 2024, has been temporarily reassigned to Naval Surface Group Southeast. He has been replaced by Capt. Kevin Hoffman.

The Mason, assigned to United States 2nd Fleet, is currently participating in a composite training unit exercise.

Officials said the leadership change will not affect the ship’s mission or operational schedule.
