Nigeria, Egypt Deepen Military Training Cooperation – COAS

The Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to strengthening military partnerships with friendly nations, particularly in the area of advanced professional training aimed at addressing evolving security threats.

General Shaibu made the statement  while receiving the Egyptian Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit to Army Headquarters in Abuja.

The army chief noted that Nigeria maintains a longstanding and mutually beneficial military relationship with Egypt, describing the collaboration between the two armies as a vital platform for enhancing operational capability and professional development.

He emphasised that sustained cooperation through advanced military courses, training exchanges and professional military education remains critical to preparing personnel to effectively tackle contemporary security challenges.

Shaibu further observed that several officers of the Nigerian Army have benefited from specialised and advanced military training programmes in Egypt, which he said have significantly strengthened the professional competence of the force.

According to him, the Nigerian Army is prepared to expand such opportunities to further equip its personnel with the knowledge and skills required to respond to complex security threats.

The COAS also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional linkages between both armies, including deeper collaboration in strategic-level training and participation in programmes at the Nigerian Army War College.

He explained that such engagements would deepen professional ties, encourage knowledge exchange and enhance joint capacity to counter emerging threats.

Shaibu also invited the Egyptian Army to participate in the upcoming Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 scheduled for July.

The army chief further stressed the need to explore additional areas of cooperation, particularly in the development of aviation capabilities and operational support systems, noting that such collaboration would improve operational readiness, technological innovation and overall mission effectiveness.

Earlier in his remarks, Ibrahim said his visit was aimed at reviewing the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between both militaries in 2024.

He disclosed that significant progress had been made in executing several aspects of the agreement, particularly in the area of training cooperation.

The Egyptian defence attaché also revealed that preparations were underway for the next Military Committee Meeting scheduled to hold in Cairo later this year.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening military collaboration with Nigeria, especially in the areas of advanced military training and intelligence sharing to effectively address contemporary security challenges confronting both nations.
