NAF commissions reconstructed runway, military apron in Rivers

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned a reconstructed runway and military apron in Rivers State as part of efforts to strengthen its operational capability and improve mission readiness.

The facilities were commissioned on August 27, 2026, by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.

The upgraded runway and military apron are expected to enhance aircraft deployment, reduce turnaround time, improve maintenance operations and boost overall operational efficiency, particularly in support of security operations across the South-South region.

Speaking at the commissioning, Aneke commended the Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for providing funding and support for the reconstruction of the facilities.

The CAS described the intervention as a significant contribution to national defence and security, noting that the improved infrastructure would strengthen the NAF’s operational readiness and response capabilities.

According to him, the facilities will enhance surveillance and reconnaissance operations while enabling the faster deployment of aircraft to tackle emerging security threats.

He said the improved operational capability would support efforts against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, piracy, organised crime and illegal bunkering.

Aneke added that the reconstructed facilities would also improve the NAF’s capacity to respond to emergencies and humanitarian situations.

He said the infrastructure would support humanitarian assistance, medical evacuation, search-and-rescue missions and disaster response operations.

The Chief of the Air Staff also acknowledged the leadership and support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and commended stakeholders whose contributions made the project possible.

The development, he said, reflects the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to building a stronger, more agile and capable force capable of responding effectively to the country’s evolving security challenges.

The NAF reiterated its commitment to advancing peace and security in Rivers State, the South-South region and across Nigeria.
