The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command (WNC), Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, has reiterated the Command’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain in the western region through enhanced surveillance, technology deployment and intelligence sharing.
Rear Admiral Mustapha made this known on March 17, 2026, during a courtesy visit to Tony O. Elumelu, Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and the financial institution.
During the visit, the naval chief conveyed the goodwill of the Chief of the Naval Staff and introduced himself as the 46th Flag Officer Commanding of the Western Naval Command.
He also commended Elumelu for his outstanding contributions to economic development across Africa, particularly through entrepreneurship initiatives that have empowered thousands of young people on the continent.
The FOC further extended an invitation to the bank’s leadership to participate in the Nigerian Navy’s forthcoming 70th Anniversary celebrations and International Fleet Review.
In his response, Elumelu expressed appreciation for the visit and congratulated Rear Admiral Mustapha on his appointment.
The business leader, who is also founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, reaffirmed his continued support for the Nigerian Navy’s efforts in promoting maritime security and national development.
He stressed the importance of a secure maritime environment to economic growth, trade and investment, noting that collaboration between public institutions and the private sector remains critical in addressing national challenges.
The visit concluded with the exchange of souvenirs and a group photograph, symbolising strengthened ties between the Nigerian Navy and the United Bank for Africa.
