SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – June 14, 2025 — As part of ongoing efforts to enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) combat capabilities, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, led a high-powered delegation to San Diego, California, for a Programme Management Review Meeting on the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

The strategic engagement, which took place from June 9 to 13, involved key stakeholders from the U.S. Government and aerospace manufacturer Bell Textron. During the sessions, Air Marshal Abubakar reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to a seamless and expedited procurement and integration process, noting that the new platforms will significantly improve the Force’s combat readiness and operational effectiveness.

The CAS also expressed profound appreciation to the United States for its continued strategic partnership and support, describing the collaboration as vital to Nigeria’s national security interests.

As part of the visit, Air Marshal Abubakar toured Camp Pendleton, California, where he engaged with personnel from the United States Marine Corps’ HMLA-367 and MALS-39 Squadrons—units responsible for operating and maintaining the AH-1Z platform. He inspected the aircraft and held technical discussions on sustainment, logistics, and maintenance best practices.

These engagements provided the NAF with valuable insights into operational doctrines and long-term support systems required for successful deployment of the helicopters.

Air Marshal Abubakar reiterated the NAF’s resolve to utilize its assets efficiently in countering terrorism, banditry, and other internal security threats. He emphasized that the acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters would bolster Nigeria’s ability to protect civilian lives and restore peace in troubled regions.

The Air Chief also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his visionary leadership and steadfast support to the military, stating that the progress of the AH-1Z project is a direct reflection of the President’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
