Navy Reaffirms Commitment to Sports as Golf & Tour Marks 13th Tournament; Major General Anaryu Emerges Champion

The Nigerian Navy has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sporting activities—particularly golf—as part of its broader effort to strengthen teamwork among personnel and deepen military–civil relations.

Speaking at the 13th Golf & Tour Charity Tournament held at the Dolphin Golf Club, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha, described sports as a “critical component of the profession of arms,” noting that golf plays a vital role in reinforcing collaboration, discipline, and camaraderie within the service.

“Sporting activities, including golf, galvanize us to work together in teams because a team is always better than an individual,” he said.

Rear Admiral Mustapha explained that the Nigerian Navy has invested in constructing golf courses across its bases to encourage wider participation among officers. He added that the initiative aligns with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, who has prioritised improved engagements between the military and the broader civilian population.

According to him, the Dolphin Golf Club maintains a membership that includes between 60 and 70 percent former military personnel but remains open to civilians, reflecting its commitment to fostering stronger social integration.

He described the Golf & Tour Charity Association’s activities as a “noble course,” combining leisure with social responsibility. He stressed that giving back to society helps reduce social vices and bridge gaps between different social classes.

“If people are looked after properly, the sense of hopelessness will reduce. That is how we lift society to the level we want it to be in due course,” he stated.

The FOC extended his best wishes to golfers participating in the tournament, urging them to enjoy the competition and embrace its spirit of service. “I want to wish them a very indelible memory as they enjoy what they do and give back to society. Godspeed onward together to all of them,” he concluded.

Major General Anaryu Wins 13th Golf & Tour Tournament

Major General Emmanuel Anaryu emerged champion of the 13th Golf & Tour tournament after two days of intense competition and consistent performance.

Introducing himself after receiving the top prize, Anaryu stated that he joined the Golf & Tour Association during the 8th edition of the tournament and has remained actively involved ever since. He recalled winning the 8th tournament in Enugu, later losing the title in Kaduna to fellow golfer Makinde—an experience that motivated him to set a personal goal for the 13th edition.

“For the 13th Golf & Tour, I said to myself I would make sure I win,” he said.

The senior officer, who plays on a handicap of 18, finished the first day with a gross score of 95 and a net score of 77. Encouraged by his caddie, who advised him to remain focused, he approached Day 2 with renewed determination.

He completed the front nine with a score of 48, correcting earlier mistakes to deliver an impressive 42 on the back nine—matching his score from the previous day. His cumulative net score of 149 secured his victory.

Expressing delight, Anaryu credited his caddie for the timely motivation. “I feel great. I give this winning also to my caddie who advised me, head down and let’s go,” he said.

Offering guidance to aspiring golfers, he emphasised discipline and respect for the sport’s principles. “Learn the golfing, learn the rules, and play by the rules. Head down and play your game. You are not playing individually; you are playing the course,” he advised.

The 13th edition of the Golf & Tour tournament concluded with commendations for participants and organisers, further cementing the association’s growing influence in Nigeria’s golfing community.
