Abuja, Nigeria – May 13, 2025 – As the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) commemorates its 61st anniversary this May, the service stands as a crucial component in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insurgency and various security threats across the nation.
Established on April 18, 1964, the NAF has evolved from a basic transport unit to a formidable force capable of strategic operations, playing an increasingly vital role in counter-terrorism efforts.
In recent times, the NAF has significantly enhanced its operational capabilities through strategic acquisitions and improved synergy with other branches of the armed forces, particularly the Nigerian Army. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, speaking at the Army War College Nigeria, highlighted the success of joint operations. He revealed that in the past year alone, the Air Component of the Northeast Operation conducted over 1,026 sorties, accumulating over 2,236 flight hours in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Air Interdiction, and Armed Reconnaissance missions. These efforts have been instrumental in restoring peace across several troubled Local Government Areas.
Furthermore, in the Northwest, air-ground synergy since June 2023 has led to the neutralization of numerous insurgent and bandit leaders and the destruction of over 265 terrorist hideouts in Sector 1 alone. In Sector 2, joint efforts have neutralized 1 over 1,150 terrorists and destroyed 404 criminal structures. Air Marshal Abubakar attributed these successes to the NAF’s enhanced Concept of Operations (CONOPS), designed for decisive and synchronized effects in joint military campaigns.
To bolster its air power, the Federal Government has handed over 15 aircraft to the NAF in the last year, with an additional 61 expected to be delivered in 2025. These acquisitions include KA-360i aircraft, DA-62 surveillance planes, T-129 ATAK helicopters, and AW-109 Trekker helicopters, among others. The NAF is also set to receive M-346FA aircraft, CASA-295 aircraft, and AH-1Z attack helicopters in the coming year. Additionally, 12 pre-owned A-Jet aircraft have been procured from the French Air Force to enhance the existing fleet.
Beyond combat operations, the NAF under Air Marshal Abubakar’s leadership has adopted a “People First, Mission Always” philosophy, focusing on rebuilding trust and strengthening civil-military relations. This includes rapid compensation for victims of unintended airstrikes, community development initiatives, and open days at NAF bases nationwide to foster better understanding and intelligence sharing with local communities.
The United States has also recognized the NAF’s commitment and significant contributions to the counter-terrorism efforts. A US delegation recently commended the Nigerian military for its successes in disrupting terrorist networks and adopting innovative, intelligence-driven tactics.
While celebrating 61 years of service, the Nigerian Air Force continues to adapt and enhance its capabilities, playing a critical role in the nation’s pursuit of peace and security in the face of evolving threats. The commitment to inter-service synergy, technological advancements, and community engagement positions the NAF as a pivotal force in the ongoing fight against insurgency.
