In a significant crackdown on oil thieves and economic saboteurs, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducted multiple airstrikes under Operation Delta Safe, resulting in the destruction of 12 illegal refining sites and two reservoirs in Abia and Rivers States on July 26, 2024.

In Umueze, Abia State, NAF aircraft performing armed reconnaissance identified numerous illegal refining sites within fenced households. This intelligence was promptly relayed to ground troops for further action. As the operation moved towards Owaza, three additional illegal refining sites concealed beneath thick vegetation were detected and destroyed.

The mission continued along the river line down to Komkom and Okoloma in Rivers State, where nine more illegal refining sites and two reservoirs were uncovered and subsequently destroyed. In total, the operation led to the demolition of 12 illegal refining sites and two reservoirs.

The presence of these illegal refining operations within fenced residential areas underscores the sophistication of the illicit oil trade, necessitating comprehensive measures beyond aerial strikes. Authorities remind those involved in these activities of the severe risks they pose to human health and the environment.

The NAF has pledged to maintain armed reconnaissance missions and the destruction of illegal refining sites to curb crude oil theft and economic sabotage to the lowest possible level.
