The Nigerian Navy has reiterated its dedication to fighting crude oil theft, piracy, human trafficking, and other maritime crimes within the nation’s territorial waters.
This commitment aligns with its constitutional mandate to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime integrity.
The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, made this declaration during the launch of Exercise Crocodile Lift 2024, a naval operation designed to hone personnel skills in amphibious operations.
Speaking through Rear Admiral Shehu Usman Gombe, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Naval Doctrine Command, Admiral Ogalla highlighted the Navy’s proactive role as the lead maritime security agency. He emphasized the importance of multi-agency collaboration to address maritime challenges effectively.
Focus on Amphibious Operations and Maritime Security
Ogalla noted that Exercise Crocodile Lift 2024 shares similarities with the recently concluded Exercise Grand African Nemo but incorporates additional simulations, including illegal fishing scenarios.
“This exercise reflects the Nigerian Navy’s resolve to develop advanced operational capabilities while fostering regional security and economic growth,” Ogalla stated.
He urged participating units and formations to leverage the platform to achieve the exercise’s objectives as outlined in directives from Naval Headquarters.
Regional Collaboration and International Partnerships
The CNS underscored the significance of regional and international partnerships in maintaining maritime security. He praised the contributions of allies and partners during Grand African Nemo 2024, which involved 26 nations, including Spain, the United Kingdom, and Gulf of Guinea countries.

“Our collaboration with international navies provides invaluable lessons and opportunities to deploy African-led solutions to regional threats,” Ogalla added.
The exercise, initiated by France, serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and joint problem-solving to address trans-border challenges and enhance maritime safety.
Franco-Nigerian Ties in Maritime Security
French Consul-General in Lagos, Mr. Laurent Favier, lauded the bilateral relationship between France and Nigeria, describing the exercise as a testament to the strong ties uniting the navies of both nations.
Favier emphasized the importance of maritime security to Nigeria’s economy and the broader Gulf of Guinea region, noting that commercial sea routes are critical to development.
“France has supported Nigeria’s fight against terrorism for over a decade through intelligence-sharing mechanisms. This exercise provides a unique opportunity to strengthen cooperation and maintain maritime security at the highest level,” Favier said.
Strengthening Synergy for Safer Seas
Crocodile Lift 2024 symbolizes the shared aspirations of Nigeria and France for a secure maritime environment. Both nations pledged to continue fostering collaboration, celebrating the impacts and achievements of their joint efforts.
“This exercise is a vital step toward ensuring a safe maritime environment, safeguarding economic routes, and creating a thriving blue economy for all stakeholders,” Favier concluded.
