The Nigerian Navy has announced measures to address issues plaguing the management of the Navy Sailing Club, aimed at reviving its structures and enhancing financial stability.
Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, disclosed that efforts to combat dilapidation and negative practices within the club have begun yielding positive results, particularly in its financial status.
Speaking as the guest of honour at the 6th FOC race organized by the club, Admiral Hassan outlined the corrective steps taken, including measures to boost financial support. He revealed that honorary members are now required to pay an annual fee of N500,000 each, while ships and naval establishments in Lagos have been instructed to contribute a monthly levy and subscriptions for their staff to utilize the club’s facilities.
Admiral Hassan emphasized the importance of subscription payments, noting that while the annual fee was previously N20,000, many members failed to fulfill their obligations, hindering the club’s growth. He urged members to demonstrate their commitment to the club by ensuring timely payment of dues.
Furthermore, the FOC highlighted the need to amend the club’s constitution to allow lower-ranking officers to hold the position of club commodore, ensuring a balance in leadership roles. He also suggested considering retired senior rates for commodore positions to enhance management effectiveness.
Expressing optimism about the club’s future, Admiral Hassan pledged continued support for water sports promotion in Nigeria and emphasized his commitment to fostering community relations.
In response, Club Commodore Navy Captain A.F. Adewuyi reiterated the importance of the boat race in promoting water sports and nurturing future athletes to represent Nigeria. He emphasized the club’s dedication to fostering talent and contributing to the development of water sports in the country.
The event showcased not only competitive racing but also the skills of young athletes in swimming and kayaking, prompting calls for their encouragement and development within the Nigerian Navy.
As the Nigerian Navy takes proactive steps to rejuvenate the Sailing Club, hopes are high for a revitalized institution that will continue to play a pivotal role in promoting water sports and nurturing talent in Nigeria.
