Lagos, Sept. 25 – The Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Juan Ignacio, has commended the Nigerian Navy for its role in reducing piracy and enhancing security in the Gulf of Guinea. The ambassador’s remarks came during a visit to Lagos by the Spanish Navy warship, BAM METEORO
The warship’s visit, which is scheduled to last from September 24 to September 27, aims to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Spain and Nigeria while bolstering regional maritime security.
Ambassador Ignacio, speaking at the event, emphasized the critical importance of maritime security, describing it as a shared responsibility among coastal nations. He praised the Nigerian Navy for its leadership in maintaining peace and stability in the Gulf of Guinea.

“Maritime security is a collective concern, and we are committed to ensuring safe seas and fostering a thriving maritime business environment. The Nigerian Navy stands out in the region with its superior capacity and capability,” Ignacio said.
The ambassador also reiterated Spain’s support for joint maritime exercises, which he said are aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations. He expressed his pleasure at having two Nigerian Navy officers aboard the Spanish warship, a move he described as a sign of deepening ties.
“This development is transforming our relationship from mere visits to a genuine partnership,” he said, revealing that the ongoing sea exercise would continue for two months.
In response, Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Western Naval Command, acknowledged the significance of the Spanish ship’s visit, marking it as the second time the vessel had docked in Nigeria within the last year. He noted that the visit is part of the European Union’s coordinated maritime presence initiative, aimed at enhancing security in the Gulf of Guinea.
Admiral Hassan highlighted that the arrival of the Spanish warship without any negative reports reflects the Nigerian Navy’s success in combating maritime crime. He added that the inclusion of Nigerian naval officers aboard the Spanish vessel would foster the exchange of ideas and improve operational strategies.
The ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and Spain, according to both officials, represents a positive step towards ensuring maritime safety and security in the region.
