Troops of Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have foiled an attack by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, during an intelligence-led operation in Enugu State.
A statement from the Spokesman of the 82 Division in Enugu, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni said the operation, carried out on May 6, 2026, targeted Imezi Owa community in Ezeagu Local Government Area following efforts to track suspected terrorist collaborators within the area.
Military authorities said troops advancing on foot towards the community came under attack from gunmen operating from a building used as a hideout, resulting in injuries to three personnel.
Despite the ambush, the troops reportedly maintained operational superiority, repelled the attackers, and secured the area, while the injured soldiers were evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment.
According to the military, the exchange of fire triggered the detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) stored inside the hideout, causing a fire outbreak that destroyed the building.
Subsequent searches conducted around the area led to the recovery of additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades, and a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities.
Security operatives later destroyed the shrine to prevent its continued use for criminal purposes and to enhance safety within the community.
One suspected collaborator was apprehended during the operation, while recovered items and the suspect were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Ezeagu Division, for further investigation.
The Joint Task Force reassured residents that ongoing operations are being conducted professionally with the aim of protecting lives and property.
Residents of Imezi Owa and surrounding communities were urged to remain calm, avoid harbouring criminal elements, and cooperate with security agencies.
The military also warned members and sympathisers of IPOB/ESN to desist from unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law, reaffirming its commitment to dismantling criminal networks and restoring peace in the South-East region.
