Army Chief: Troop Welfare Central to Command as New Barracks Housing Commissioned in Port Harcourt

PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State, June 13, 2026 — The welfare of Nigerian Army personnel remains a central pillar of his command philosophy, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shuaibu said Tuesday at the commissioning of a new 60-unit officers’ transit accommodation at the 6 Division Headquarters, Port Harcourt Barracks.

The project, jointly executed by Tantita Security Services and Maton Engineering as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, is aimed at easing the housing deficit for officers posted or deployed within the 6 Division Area of Responsibility.

Represented by Maj. Gen. Taritimiye Gagariga, Director General of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, the COAS said “a properly accommodated soldier is better focused, motivated, and prepared for operational tasks.” He added that the transit block directly addresses a critical housing gap for officers on posting and operational deployment.

Shuaibu also pointed to the Niger Delta’s unique security challenges, stressing the need for strong synergy among stakeholders. He praised Tantita Security Services as “a dependable partner in protecting critical national assets and combating oil theft.”

Donors cite operational effectiveness

Speaking for the donors, Tantita Security Services Security Manager and Military Liaison Officer Brig. Gen. Efe Edafioghore (rtd) said the facility was built out of the belief that “the welfare of military personnel is a critical component of operational effectiveness.”

Edafioghore commended the leadership of the General Officer Commanding 6 Division for improving living conditions for troops and assured the Army of Tantita’s continued partnership to protect vital national assets.

GOC: Partnership tackles housing shortage

GOC 6 Division and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force South South Operation DELTA SAFE, Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Emekah, said an acute shortage of decent housing was one of the main challenges he met upon assuming command.

Recognizing that comfortable accommodation is “indispensable to troops’ morale,” Emekah said he sought external support to complement Army efforts. He described the new block as “one of the largest and most significant accommodation interventions ever executed at the Divisional level,” calling it proof of what civil-military collaboration can achieve.

Emekah thanked the Chairman and staff of Tantita Security Services, saying the project is “far more than a mere physical structure” but “a profound investment in the human element of the nation’s joint security architecture” that will yield long-term dividends in troop performance.
