Retired Gen Rabe Abubakar Buried Amid Grief, Renewed Concerns Over Insecurity

Former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), who died in captivity two weeks after being abducted by bandits, has been laid to rest in Katsina State amid widespread grief and renewed concerns over the country’s security challenges.

The retired military officer was buried on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites. The funeral was attended by family members, senior military officers, government officials, traditional leaders and residents who gathered to pay their last respects.

Abubakar was kidnapped alongside his wife on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The solemn burial ceremony was marked by Qur’anic recitations and prayers in recognition of the late officer’s years of dedicated service to the nation.

Many mourners were visibly emotional as they reflected on the circumstances surrounding his death, describing it as a tragic loss for both Katsina State and Nigeria.

Several residents expressed shock that a man who devoted his life to defending the country could fall victim to the insecurity he once fought against.

“This is a painful loss, not just to the family but to the entire state,” a resident, Dr. Sama’ila Balarabe, said.

“He served this country faithfully, yet he died in such circumstances.”

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the late general’s wife remains in the custody of the kidnappers, heightening concerns among family members and the public.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Defence Headquarters paid tribute to the deceased officer, describing him as a committed and dedicated soldier who made significant contributions to military operations, particularly in the fight against insurgency.

The military said General Abubakar’s commitment to duty, professionalism and service to Nigeria would remain a shining example for members of the Armed Forces.

The Defence Headquarters also assured Nigerians that efforts were ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired officer and to dismantle terrorist and criminal networks operating across the country.

The death of the retired general has continued to generate reactions nationwide, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the persistent threat posed by bandits and other criminal groups.

Across social media platforms, citizens questioned the safety of ordinary Nigerians if a retired senior military officer could be abducted and die in captivity.

Many called on security agencies and government authorities to intensify ongoing operations against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism, particularly in the North-West region.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing insecurity challenge confronting several parts of the country and renewed calls for stronger measures to protect lives and property.
