Nigerian Army moves to operationalise 83 Division in Benin City

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding its force structure and strengthening operational capabilities, with plans to soon operationalise the newly established 83 Division in Benin City, Edo State.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a courtesy visit to Governor Monday Okpebholo at the Government House, Benin City.

Shaibu said the establishment of the Division was part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing expansion from eight to 12 divisions to improve its operational reach, strengthen command and control and enhance its capacity to respond swiftly to emerging security threats across the country.

He explained that the new formation, with its headquarters in Benin City, would particularly strengthen the Army’s presence in Edo State and the wider South-South region.

According to him, the expansion drive is aimed at building a more responsive force capable of addressing the country’s evolving security challenges through improved military deployment and operational coordination.

The Army Chief said his visit to Edo State was also aimed at assessing operational activities at Headquarters 4 Brigade and commissioning key projects designed to improve personnel welfare and strengthen civil-military relations.

Among the projects are the Affordable Home Ownership Option for Soldiers (AHOOAS) and various Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives intended to improve the living conditions of personnel and enhance relations between the Army and host communities.

He noted that improving the welfare of soldiers remained an important aspect of strengthening operational effectiveness, adding that the Army would continue to invest in initiatives that support personnel and improve their working conditions.

Responding, Governor Okpebholo commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and contributions to maintaining peace and security in Edo State.

The governor assured the Chief of Army Staff of his administration’s continued support and cooperation with the military and other security agencies to address security challenges and sustain stability in the state.

He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with the Nigerian Army in providing an enabling environment for security operations.

The planned operationalisation of 83 Division represents part of the Nigerian Army’s broader force expansion programme, which is expected to improve its geographical coverage, operational coordination and capacity to respond to security threats.

The development is also expected to strengthen the Army’s presence in the South-South region as it continues efforts to enhance national security and protect lives and property.
