The Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, conducted an operational tour of Sokoto State on Sunday, visiting key military installations within the 8 Division’s area of responsibility to assess ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.
According to a statement by Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, the acting COAS arrived in Sokoto early Sunday and proceeded to Forward Operations Base Tangaza and 248 Battalion in Illela, where he was briefed on the current security situation by Brig.-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding the 8 Division.
During his address to troops stationed at Tangaza and Illela, Lt.-Gen. Oluyede commended their dedication and sacrifices in combating terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria’s North West. He explained that his visit aimed to gather direct insights into the security landscape and challenges faced by personnel in the field.
“I am here to gain first-hand information and provide you with the support needed to significantly curtail terrorist activities in your areas of responsibility,” Oluyede assured the troops. He also encouraged them to remain vigilant and avoid any complacency that might hinder the ongoing operations.
In meetings with Bashir Salihu, Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area, along with traditional leaders and security agency heads in Illela, Lt.-Gen. Oluyede called for greater collaboration to bolster security in the region. He urged local communities to support military efforts by providing credible intelligence to help protect residents and enhance nationwide security.
“The Nigerian Army belongs to all of us,” he stated. “Without local support, the Army’s efforts cannot succeed. We must all work together to safeguard our country.”
The Acting COAS pledged continued backing for the troops and reiterated his commitment to overcoming the security challenges facing the North West region.
