The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has finalized key arrangements for acquiring 24 M-346 Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) jets and 10 AW-109 Trekker helicopters in a recent Programme Management Review Meeting in Italy.
The meeting involved NAF officials led by Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), alongside representatives from Nigeria’s Defence and Finance ministries.
During the meeting with Messrs Leonardo S.p.A., discussions centered around the delivery schedule for the M-346 jets and AW-109 helicopters, aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s military capabilities. The CAS confirmed that the first batch of three M-346 aircraft is expected to be delivered by early 2025, with the remaining 21 to be received in stages until mid-2026. Additionally, Nigeria will acquire 10 more AW-109 Trekker helicopters by early 2026, adding to the two already in operation.
While in Italy, the CAS visited Leonardo’s headquarters in Rome and inspected the first batch of six M-346 jets, three of which are nearing completion. He also reviewed the necessary support systems to enhance the NAF’s operational readiness. Furthermore, the CAS proposed the establishment of a Programme Management Office to ensure smooth project implementation and advocated for the creation of a maintenance hub in Nigeria to provide long-term support for the M-346 fleet.
Leonardo’s Aircraft Division showcased the M-346’s advanced capabilities during an aerial display. The M-346 jets, which are capable of both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s air combat capabilities. The AW-109 helicopters will play key roles in Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), tactical airlift, and medical evacuation operations.
These acquisitions align with the CAS’s strategic vision to transform the NAF into a more agile and resilient force, optimizing its structure for enhanced operational effectiveness.
The collaboration with Leonardo S.p.A. marks a significant step in modernizing Nigeria’s air fleet, enhancing the nation’s defense capabilities, and ensuring long-term operational readiness through advanced maintenance infrastructure in the country.
