The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Wednesday, October 30, 2025, witnessed a symbolic change of command as Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Sunday Kelvin Aneke formally assumed office as the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff (CAS).
At the brief but dignified handover ceremony held at the NAF Headquarters, Abuja, AVM Aneke described his appointment as “a tremendous privilege and a solemn duty,” pledging to lead the Force with humility, integrity, discipline, and renewed commitment to national security.
He lauded his predecessor, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar (rtd), for what he called “exceptional leadership and professionalism” in steering the Air Force through a defining period in Nigeria’s counterterrorism and air operations.
“I pay glowing tribute to Air Marshal Abubakar for his courage, vision, and service to the nation. His legacy of excellence will remain a guiding light as we consolidate on the strong foundation he has built,” Aneke said.
Outgoing CAS Reflects on Achievements
In his valedictory address, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to lead the NAF during a period of transformation and operational advancement.
He highlighted key milestones under his command, including enhanced operational efficiency, expanded capacity building, and Nigeria’s assumption of the Chairmanship of the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF) — a major diplomatic and defence achievement for the country.
The former Air Chief described AVM Aneke as “an officer of proven integrity, dedication, and competence” and urged him to sustain the gains recorded, prioritize personnel welfare, and maintain a combat-ready and people-focused Air Force.
> “The Nigerian Air Force has come a long way in improving its operational capabilities and professionalism. I have full confidence that my successor will continue to move the Service forward,” Abubakar stated.
He also paid tribute to fallen heroes and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Armed Forces leadership, colleagues, and his family for their unwavering support throughout his service.
Aneke Reaffirms Loyalty to Tinubu, Constitution
In his acceptance speech, the new Air Chief expressed deep appreciation to President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in him.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s unflinching loyalty to the President, the Constitution, and the Nigerian people, while pledging to enhance synergy across the Armed Forces and strengthen Nigeria’s air power capabilities.
> “We will consolidate on existing gains, deepen inter-service cooperation, and ensure that the Nigerian Air Force remains a disciplined, innovative, and mission-focused institution,” Aneke said.
He also acknowledged the support of the 10th National Assembly, colleagues across the Armed Forces, and his family, describing them as integral to his professional journey.
A New Era for the Air Force
With the transition complete, the Nigerian Air Force now begins what many describe as a new era of leadership and innovation. Analysts believe AVM Aneke’s emphasis on training, technology, and strategic innovation aligns with ongoing efforts to modernize the military and strengthen Nigeria’s defence posture.
Under his command, the NAF is expected to continue driving its modernization agenda — focusing on airspace security, joint operations, and rapid-response capabilities in line with Nigeria’s national security priorities.
The Service, which prides itself on being “Willing, Able, and Ready” to defend the nation’s airspace, looks set to build upon the legacy of professionalism, discipline, and operational excellence.
